Dedication. Resilience. A hard worker. These are all words that were echoed for Kentucky Wesleyan football’s newest signee, Jack Delaney. Last Wednesday the Logan County Career and Technical Center hosted Delaney’s signing to play football at the next level after finishing his senior season with the Logan County Cougars in the fall. Son to Courtney and Dave Delaney, brother to Charlie and Ellie, each were all in attendance to celebrate Jack’s achievement.
Cougars football head coach Todd Adler expressed at the beginning of the ceremony, “There is no doubt in my mind that you will be successful at the next level.” Jack was a two-way player his senior year playing on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. The journey started in the fourth grade for Jack as a three-sport athlete playing baseball and basketball, before ultimately adding football. Despite a small stature, Jack excelled and stuck with football through middle school and into high school.
As Covid-19 hit, teams had to be selective of who traveled for game days with the team, as Jack was one of three freshmen that ended up seeing the field and playing. Determined to play three sports, Jack’s daily routine consisted of football workouts before school, going to school, then basketball and baseball practices or games afterwards.
In the emotional letter to her son, Courtney elaborated on the biggest testament to Jack overcoming adversity and his dedication to the sport he played and to his family, “On September 29th, 2022, our lives were changed forever. His dad was life-flighted and hospitalized in the ICU for a month, and in that time what a lot of people don’t know is that Jack only missed one practice in that time. He would go to school, practice afterwards then head to Nashville for twenty minutes just to see his dad and me and repeat again the next day. It was at that time, Jack decided to put all he had into football just like his football brothers put everything into him.”
As the ceremony closed, Jack thanked his teammates, coaches, his family and friends, as well as everyone in attendance for coming to celebrate with him as he signed his letter of intent to play for the Panthers at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Jack concluded his senior season for the Cougars in the fall and looks forward to taking his talents to the next level.
