Last week, the Logan County Cougars baseball team participated in the Fort Walton Beach Bash Tournament in Florida. The Cougars came away with three huge victories over the Lexington Christian Eagles, the Hancock County Hornets, and the Graves County Eagles. It marked a successful road trip with the Cougars coming away with multiple wins in a tournament setting, which is important down the line for the postseason. With plenty of games ahead, the Cougars are starting to pick up momentum and objects that are in motion tend to stay in motion with that momentum.
Their first win against Lexington Christian saw them run away with a 14-0 shutout. Starting with the pitching, senior Chance Sweeney earned the win in six and two-thirds innings allowing just two hits, four walks, striking out six batters on the day. The Cougars jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the bats were rolling as Tate McLean, Kade Wall, and Tripp Wadlington all crossed home plate. The Cougars totaled 11 hits for the game as the offense was full steam ahead.
The Cougars second win against the Hornets saw the Cougars fall behind 3-1 midway through the contest, but a huge scoring burst in the bottom of the sixth inning saw the Cougars take a commanding 9-3 lead, crossing home plate eight times on five hits. Starting pitcher Jake Regan took home the victory, allowing four hits, three walks, and three runs, but striking out six in six innings. Senior Samuel Hayes led the Cougars with hits on 3-of-4 at-bats.
The Cougars third win against Graves County saw them win by double-digits again with a 14-2 victory. Junior Brady Hinton recorded five runs batted in on three hits, including a triple, leading the Cougars on offense. Senior pitcher Braden Engler took the win pitching in six innings. Engler surrendered four hits and two runs, striking out two and walking two.
After a couple of tough losses to open the week, the Cougars went on to blow out their next three opponents outscoring the opposing teams 37-6. Speaking with Cougars head coach Ethan Meguiar, he talked about how he felt his team executed, “We got three solid pitching performances and our offense picked it up scoring 37 runs our last three games after being shut out the first two down here.” When talking about what improvements Coach Meguiar saw from his team, he said, “We had much better approaches at the plate. Cutting down on our strikeouts helped greatly in the last three games and helped us get those wins.”
With the tournament behind them the Cougars improved to 7-9 on the season as they look ahead to their return home and the slate of games they have coming up with their next home game against Barren County on Saturday.
