Monday night the Logan County Lady Cougars softball team was back in action at home after playing in the Kentucky 2A Sectional on Saturday. Having defeated Edmonson County 14-0, but losing to the Warren East Lady Raiders in a close 3-4 decision, the Lady Cougars were able to defeat the Lady Raiders the second go-around in a 13-0 rout at home. The Lady Cougars claimed their sixth victory of the season as they continued their strong start to the year.
For the Lady Cougars, junior Addie Cartas started at pitcher on Monday and looked dominant at the mound. Cartas pitched all five innings with just one hit allowed, no walks, and added eight strikeouts to her season total of 24 on the year earning the win. The defense behind her played just as well, as a line drive was snagged at first base by senior Trinity Case, followed up with a catch in the outfield from senior Sydni Blick that closed out the game in the top of the fifth inning.
On the hitting side of the contest, the Lady Cougars jumped out to a sizable 6-0 lead after the first inning as the offense was rolling to start. Lead-off hitter Hailey Burgess was able to get on base and was the start to a huge inning. Emerson McKinnis singled, pushing two runs in for the first scores of the game. Four more runs would cross home plate before closing out the inning.
The bottom of the second inning saw senior Nora Epley hit a solo home run, as later in the rotation, Keirsten Harper provided a crucial single that drove in three more runs to push the lead to double digits. Blick crushed a ball over the fence in the bottom of the third, scoring three more runs for the Lady Cougars in the lop-sided contest. The Lady Cougars totaled 13 hits on the day tying their season-high against Glasgow.
Looking ahead to their schedule, tonight the Lady Cougars meet the Edmonson County Lady Cats again at home before preparing for their roadtrip to Ft. Walton Beach, Florida where they will play in the Fort Walton Beach Bash tournament next week during spring break.
