On Sunday, March 17, 2024, at approximately 8:23 p.m., K9 Deputy Smith with the Logan County Sheriff’s Department, initiated a traffic stop on a white BMW in the area of the 68/80 bypass and Morgantown Road.
Upon contact with the operator and sole occupant, who was later identified as Kyle Lyons of Auburn, Ky., K9 Deputy Smith observed a hypodermic needle cap laying in the operator’s lap. After obtaining the operator’s information, K9 Deputy Smith had Lyons stand near his cruiser while he ran the information through Logan County Dispatch.
After exiting his cruiser, K9 Deputy Smith observed a tourniquet and a hypodermic needle, with a brown liquid inside, lying next to the BMW’s driver side door. At that time, K9 Deputy Smith detained Lyons and performed a probable cause search of the vehicle. Inside the vehicle, K9 Deputy Smith located a digital scale with suspected narcotics residue, $263 in multiple denominations, and approximately 22 grams of suspected “purple” fentanyl.
Lyons was arrested and lodged in the Logan County Detention Center with the following charges trafficking in controlled substance (fentanyl), possession of a controlled substance (fentanyl), drug paraphernalia, license to be in possession, and failure to wear seat belt.
K9 Deputy Smith was assisted on scene by Deputy Johnson.
