Thomas M. Hayes, of Auburn, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012, in Bowling Green.

He was born in Logan County Jan. 6, 1929, a son of the late Ira and Betty Corbin Hayes. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by his daughter, Lana Michile Hayes; his sisters, Iola Summers, Lena Ayers and Clara Ruth Young; his brothers, Howard Hayes, Willie Hayes, Burl Hayes, Minor Lee Hayes, Fred Hayes, Hubert Hayes, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hayes was a retired machinist with Eaton Corporation and Cutler-Hamner. He was a Korean War veteran in the United States Army holding the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a long time member of the Auburn American Legion Post 258, a member of the D. A. V., a member of the International Association of Machinists and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a avid UK basketball fan, loved woodworking, fishing and working in his yard. He loved his family and home and was a 58 year member of the New Friendship Baptist church.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 25 at 3 p.m. in the Young Funeral Home Auburn Chapel with Reverend Tom Lawhon officiating. Burial followed in the Auburn Cemetery. Visitation began Friday, May 25 at a p.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers were Danny Hayes, Tommy Hayes, Raleigh Hayes, Wayne Hayes, Mark Summers, Jimmy Hayes and Jerry Kaysinger.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janelle Hayes; his daughter, Jana Hanks and Charles Kelley of Auburn; his granddaughter, Laura Hanks Petrino and Josh of Charleston, S.C.; his grandson, Keeton Hanks of Auburn, and special granddogs, Chase and Molly.

The family ask that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Auburn American Legion Post 258 in Memory of Thomas M. Hayes.
