Bilyeu told of how a tractor trailer truck nearly jack-knifed recently when it came upon a school bus letting kids off. “You can see the black skid marks on the road,” said Bilyeu.
The father of two told the court he wasn’t sure what steps to take about getting something done so he spoke to an attorney, who told him he needed to start with fiscal court first for support.
Magistrate Curtis Watkins assured Bilyeu he had the county’s support and advised him to contact the Kentucky Transportation Department (KTD) who could most surely help. Watkins also came up with the county writing a letter on behalf of Bilyeu asking the state for help as well.
“There have been nine fatalities on that stretch of road since I’ve lived out there the past 19 years,” said Bilyeu adding, “I’m just afraid the next one may involve a school bus full of kids.”
Judge Executive Logan Chick told Bilyeu he would call Greg Meredith chief district engineer for the KTD after the fiscal court meeting letting him know the issue.
Bilyeu said he felt the letter of support from the court would help and also thought clearing out the fence row around the curve could make a big difference. There is a school bus stop ahead sign on the curve but you cannot see it very well said Bilyeu.
A few days after the meeting the state was out cutting back the curve from trees and brush. According to Keirsten Jaggers Public, Information Officer of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the state is still looking into what the area needs.
