Logan unbeaten in state Babe Ruth tourney

The Logan County 15-and-under Babe Ruth All-Stars have been doing great in their state tournament, which is being played at Jackie Browning Park in Glasgow.

The team captured the top seed by going 3-0 in pool play and won the first two games in the tournament portion of the event on Sunday.

Last week during pool play, Logan County be Hart County 13-0, St. Matthews 6-5 and Breckinridge County 10-3 to secure the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

First game of tournament play after the seeding was on Sunday, July 25, with Logan County beating Warren County 11-1.

Ryan Basham lead Logan County with two hits – including a double – two RBI and two runs. Gage Hales had a double and scored twice. Chris Powell had an RBI and a single.

Zach Lee also had a pair of RBI and scored twice. Dustin Cartas scored twice and drove in one. Thomas Miller scored two runs. Cody Hunt and Aaron Baldwin each had one RBI. Hunt also scored a run.

Chris Powell had the winning hit that brought the run in for a 10-run mercy rule victory.

Gage Hales pitched six innings giving up one run on two hits, five strikeouts and one walk.

The second game of the state tournament was played later that night with Logan County pulling out an 8-7 victory over Hikes Point of Louisville.

Dustin Cartas drove in Chris Powell with a single for the game-winning run.

Cartas also had a solo home run in the first inning, giving him two RBI and a run scored.

Gage Hales had a double and a single, two RBI and scored once.

Chris Powell had a single, scored twice and drove in one.

Avery Collier had a single and an RBI.

Ryan Basham and Thomas Miller each had an RBI. Zach Lee scored twice. Cody Hunt and Aaron Baldwin each scored once.

Ryan Basham pitched five innings giving up seven runs on five hits, two strike outs and no walks. Relief pitcher Dustin Cartas pitched two innings giving up no runs on one hit, two strikeouts and one walk.

The final play in the bottom of the seventh inning was a hit to second baseman Cody Hunt, who then threw to first baseman Zach Lee for the final out.
