Have you ever wanted to fly a plane? Build a rocket, or a glider? Now is the time to discover the thrill and magic of flight. This is the opportunity for middle & high school youth to experience the joy, thrill and magic of flight. Learn the principles of flight, the basics of navigation, do some stargazing and learn how ancient mariners could tell their location on the earth by the stars. Learn about lift, thrust, gravity and drag. Plan and conduct a flight. Log your first flight with a Certified Flight instructor.

A new and exciting curriculum has been adopted by 4-H. As a part of introducing this new curriculum we will be hosting our 2nd annual "4-H Aerospace/Aviation Camp" at West KY 4-H Camp Sept. 9-11 2010. The middle and high school age participants will build gliders, rockets of several types, and learn about weather and careers in aviation. The 4-Hers will take to the air and under the direction of a certified flight instructor, and actually pilot an airplane.

Youth will build a series of rockets and gliders. They will spend time on flight simulators, participate in some team building activities, some traditional camp activities like swimming and ropes courses, and take hands on classes in areas such as principles of flight and weather. Youth will also participate in a mini career day examining aerospace/aviation related jobs ranging from airline pilot, crop duster, airframe and power plant technician, air traffic controller and more.

This pilot project is being partially funded by the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board through an endowment established with the Kentucky 4-H Foundation. If this program is successful it will be replicated not only in Western Kentucky but possibly at all four of the Kentucky 4-H Camps.

The cost of this program is $180 and includes camp fees, aircraft rental, and a T-shirt. For more information contact the Logan Co. Extension office at 270-726-6323. As Leonard Ad Vance wrote…"Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you long to return."
