Mayor Jim Wilkerson said the city recently got the contract for the sale back from its attorney and that there was nothing in it that would hold things up.
The city sent the contract back to Houchens for some minor revisions, and Wilkerson said that he plans on signing it once it gets back to him with the corrections.
“We are expecting some revisions, but it’s nothing to stop it from moving forward with it,” Wilkerson said.
The city council voted on Friday, Dec. 12 to sell its land that currently houses the town’s maintenance garage to Houchens Industries for $60,000.
Houchens is also purchasing two other pieces of property from private individuals in Adairville to build a new Crossroads IGA near the city square.
The new store would include a grocery along with a Subway restaurant and gas pumps. Houchens currently operates the IGA grocery store on the square, but will close that business when the new facility is completed.
Wilkerson said he wasn’t sure when exactly the city will move out of the current maintenance building, but the contract states that Houchens will take possession of it around March 20.
The plan, Wilkerson said, is to build a new maintenance building on property the city owns on the south side of town near the water plant.
The mayor said he would like to see the building be similar in size to the current maintenance garage.
“My goal would not be to make it smaller,” Wilkerson said. “That’ll be ultimately for the council to decide, but it’s better to build it big enough the first time than to have to go back and add to it later.”
Wilkerson said since the project will cost over $25,000, the city will have sealed bids before deciding on who will get the contract for the new building.
