After serving as police chief in Auburn for five years, Scott Harmon is stepping down.

“I took a job as a government contractor and I’m going to Afghanistan,” Harmon said. He’ll be gone for a year and will be doing investigations there.

“I’m excited. It’s something I’m looking forward to,” Harmon said.

Before coming to Auburn as police chief, Harmon had worked for the sheriff’s department.

Mayor Dewey Roche said they are sorry to lose Harmon, but residents can rest assured that there will be no loss of police coverage in Auburn.

Ron Mills, who had been serving Auburn as a police officer, is now the police chief and the sheriff’s department is also helping out with coverage around Auburn.

Roche said they have money in the budget for a police chief and officer and will discuss hiring a new officer.
