The situation was discussed at last weeks city council meeting and mayor Jim Wilkerson said Friday that there are several options that could work out.
"I'm hoping to have something sooner rather than later," Wilkerson said. "I'm working as hard as I can to get something in here."
Houchens Industries closed the IGA grocery store on the square last month.
The Bowling Green-based company is still under lease for the building, which is owned by Gamail Aiyad, a businessman from the Nashville area.
Wilkerson said that Aiyad has been negotiating with Houchens to possibly buy the equipment that is left in the building.
"He would go ahead and open it up (as a grocery), but he believes the price Houchens is asking is way too much and he is unwilling to pay that," Wilkerson said.
The lease agreement between Houchens and Aiyad runs through September.
Wilkerson said that Aiyad has indicated that if he doesn't reach an agreement with Houchens, he may go ahead and reopen the store with otherequipment. If the store on the square does reopen, it may be smaller than before.
"He may put up a partition so that it's not such a big space," Wilkerson said. "That building was originally two, but they tore down a wall to make it the size it is now."
