News - The big news is that the IGA grocery is closing today. Houchens Industries, owner of the Adairville IGA, is pulling the plug. No more grocery. They are also planning to sell the three pieces of land they purchased for a future store. Officials with the company said there just was not enough business to justify staying open. In fact, they reported losing heavily over the last two years.
The IGA will reopen on Monday the 22 for a sale of all the remaining inventory. This will probably take about three days. Then the store will close permanently.
This is a tremendous loss for the town. The grocery had been the anchor store for the town square. The elderly and those who walked to the store will be particularly hard hit.
Hopefully the BP Service Center and the Dollar General Store will take up the slack. Just to let those that had heard Houchens Industries might buy the Dollar General and put in groceries there, it is not true. Stephen Reed of Houchens told me directly that the rumor was not true. Houchens and IGA are leaving with no plans to return.
There is a possibility that the actual owners of the building that currently houses the local grocery may put in another store. They are a family from Nashville who currently operate several small groceries in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. They have shown interest in getting something in the building.
In the mean time the citizens who traditionally buy their groceries in Adairville will have to find their food elsewhere. There will be no anchor store on the square to attract large numbers to the center of the city and who might in the process help the other merchants on the square.
Hopefully the leadership of the community can help attract a new grocery to Adairville.
I drove over to the tiny "village" of Dot, Kentucky this week. The tiny grocery is open again and they have a great restaurant. (Not many groceries.) Ronnie and Geraldine Harper are the owners. Jo Ann Clinard is the cook. And can she cook. The best chocolate pie since I ate my mothers 20 years ago. Great food. They close at 3 p.m. so don't be late. You will be in for a real treat.
I have a correction to make. I always try to check out my history events closely. No less than three people told me about one of the young men who raised the flag at Iwo Jima being from Hilltop outside of Adairville.
Well, it is the wrong Hilltop. There is another Hilltop in Kentucky and that is where the young man came from. I am sorry he was not from our territory. Correction made.
The U.S. Census is underway. Please fill out the form and answer the eight questions. Marla Sircy, Adairville's representative on the county census committee, spoke at the local Adairville Chamber of Commerce meeting this week. She stressed how important it is to get the information back to the government. We need everyone counted. This could mean more money for our local schools, city and county. The U.S. Government returns money based on population, incomes and etc. Mrs. Sircy said that if the forms are not returned that you will get a visit from the census taker. If some one taking the census visits your home they should have the proper badge and other credentials. Never give your social security number, bank account or credit card number. This information is not asked by official census takers.
This is another appeal to have your street number displayed in front of or on your house. The county emergency units have had trouble finding homes when called to Adairville.
With A Smile - I smile when I think of my mother and father. They died many years ago but I still love them. I think it is good for us all to think back on the good times in our lives. I loved the being together, the love from my parents, the excitement of each day and the life as a youth. I wish I could share with young people today the wonderful experience I had growing up. You to show look back on he good times of the past and share with the youth of today.
Till next time
Good night sweet Angel sisters and Mrs. Calabash where ever you are.
