Russellville's city council decided to wait on purchasing a $600,000 ladder truck for the fire department Tuesday evening.

Fire Chief Billy Poole had asked for the truck weeks ago citing the 20-year-old ladder truck the city currently owns is a safety hazard and needs to be replaced.

Council members and Mayor Gene Zick could not find where the money would come from to buy the truck without raising taxes.

Chief Poole said he was disappointed but understood the city's financial constraints.

"I had to ask for the safety of the city's citizens a well as the county's," said Poole.

Mayor Zick said he didn't believe the purchase was an emergency situation and wanted to pursue grants to help pay for the truck in the future.
