Dr. Kamal Singh will present a program on Women’s Heart Health and Registered Dietician Teresa Hildabrand will offer tips on maintaining a heart-healthy diet.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. today. Over 60 million Americans have some form of heart disease, and 50 millions suffer from high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.
There are many factors that put you at risk for heart disease, including diabetes, smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol and obesity. Having a close family member with heart disease also puts you at greater risk. Stress, lack of exercise and a resting heart rate of 75 or above per minute are other risk factors.
Surprisingly, more women than men die of heart disease every year. Women are six time more likely to die of heart disease than of breast cancer. Heart disease kills more women over 65 than all other cancers combined. Symptoms of heart attack in women are often harder to recognize because women often have blockages in the smaller arteries that supply blood to the heart. In fact, women's symptoms are often unrelated to chest pain.
If you think you are at risk for heart disease, or if you just want to know more, make plans to attend our Healthy Heart Luncheon on Feb. 2. The event is free, but please call 725-4601 to make your lunch reservation.
