Hello Adairville and Logan County!

“The Land of Logan” as our unique county is called. Thanksgiving has come and gone and the Christmas holidays are upon us.

Monday I had the honor to be a guest on the Don Neagle Show on WRUS Radio. We talked about Nashville years ago. The place that seemed to touch the hearts of many callers was the subject of Harvey's Department Store. There were several callers that talked about their trips to Harvey's either as children or young adults. It was truly a unique place.

Harvey's grew from a small department store into a complex of five buildings that ran along Church Street. It was the largest department store in the south at one time. Mr. Harvey was a great showman and promoter and kept the interest of the public. He had the public wanting to come back.

The store was the first to have escalators, had a circus and zoo on one floor that brought the kids in large numbers and a big carousel that every kid wanted to ride. Later Mr. Harvey used the wooden horses in the carousel as a theme for his store and had them on every floor and in all his ads in the newspapers.

The other thing that so many people remember is the Nativity scene that Harvey's sponsored at the Centennial Park in Nashville. It was all white and was a huge display with the Parthenon in the back ground.

Different colored lights came on every few minutes so that for a while the Nativity was blue, then green and then red. Thousands of people came to see this beautiful site every Christmas. It was said that people came from more than 30 states every year to see the beautiful site.

Many if not most Logan County citizens over 50 saw the Harvey's Nativity years ago and still remember the beauty and how special it was. The Nativity was a fixture in Nashville for over 30 years and was eventually sold by Harvey Jr. after his fathers death. A great loss to the citizens of the upper south.

Sick Call Clyde Darden who has been in St. Thomas Hospital but is now home. Bobby Joe Hallman who suffered a heart attack and had surgery at Vanderbilt, Bobby Joe's grandson who has a mass behind his one good eye and Charlene Moon Johnson who is currently undergoing tests.

Events - The Adairville/South Logan Chamber of Commerce's Annual Christmas Dinner was a rousing success. Don Neagle was the speaker and received the Outstanding Citizen Award. John Lee Barnes, Rev. William Washington and Regina Phillips all received awards for their public service and great help to our community. Unfortunately Mrs. Phillips had the flu and was unable to attend.

The Chamber has also sponsored the decorating of the town square park for the holidays and worked with the town merchants to light up the businesses for the holidays. It is worth the ride for anyone in the county to come to Adairville and see all the lights at night.

The merchants in town have handouts that have the schedule of events for the holidays. The schedule is:

Fridays December 4, 11 & 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. Santa Claus

Saturday December 5, 12 & 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. Caroling

December 12 official lighting of tree at 6 p.m. & Live Nativity

This Saturday night is the Red River Fish & Game Club's Annual Christmas Dinner. Covered dish. Bring two vegitables. The club will furnish meats, drinks and desserts. Members, families and their guests are invited.

There is no charge for this event.

Monday December 7 is the judging for Christmas Decorating. There will be awards for both homes and businesses. The winners will be announced next week.

The Tenn-Tucky State Line Tavern is sponsoring an Angel Tree for needy children. Please contact Mrs. Jeff Taylor for assistance. The number is 539-9919.

A Pat On The Back goes to Janet Trimble. A young lady that has an outstanding husband and children. She does her part to keep the family business looking good. Every season she is out decorating the flower boxes/wood kegs at the station. She does a number of behind the scenes to help others and to be a good Adairville Citizens. We salute Janet Trimble for all the good things she does.

With A Smile As a child I use to visit a great aunt McGavock at the old Two Rivers Mansion across the highway from Opry Land Mall and Hotel. My great aunt loved chihuahuas and loved to show them off. She also loved chocolate ice cream and always served it to her guests.

On one occasion I went with my grand mother to visit. We were served chocolate ice cream. I went to the front parlor to eat my ice cream and to play with the chihuahuas. Some how I turned my bowl of ice cream over right on the beautiful and very old couch. I was very young and did not want to tell anyone what I had done. I tried to clean the ice cream up as best I could. The remainder I hid with a cushion.

Many years later the historic Two Rivers Mansion is now open for tours. That same couch is in the front parlor. The tour guide proudly tells the visitors to look on the couch and see the brown stains. She speculates that it is a blood stain from a duel many years before or possible from an injured confederate soldier. I just smile and think, oh no lady, that is the stain from chocolate ice cream spilt by a child many years ago.

Till next time good night "Mrs. Wiliford", the ladies at city hall, Mrs. Elizabeth Hall and Mrs. Calabash where ever you are.
