Bucksville the focus of Hometown History Day

The Bucksville area will be in the spotlight on October 3. Everyone is invited to attend Hometown History Day activities in "downtown" Bucksville and visit the Rock House near Chandlers.

Events begin at 1:30 p.m. with the viewing of exhibits at Gasper River Cumberland Presbyterian Church fellowship hall in Bucksville. At 2 p.m. there will be a program in the sanctuary with Memories of Bucksville by Glen Tinsley, School Days at Bucksville by Thelma Grayson, and History of the Church by Leo Duncan.

Following the program, the group will tour the Masonic Lodge and the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, with brief histories presented at each place. Informal sharing of memories by those in attendance will be an important part of the day.

Anyone who has items that reflect something about the history of Bucksville is encouraged to bring them for display. The Presbyterian church will be open by 1:30 p.m. to receive such items.

At the conclusion of activities at Bucksville, everyone is invited to visit the Rock House at 6790 Chandlers Road, Hwy. 103. An example of architecture common to Ireland, it was built by stonemason David Sawyer who served Logan County as magistrate and sheriff in the early 1800s. Charles Jr. and Kim Miles are the current owners.

A brief printed history of Bucksville and the Rock House will be distributed to those in attendance.

This is the ninth year that Hometown History Day has been a part of the Tobacco & Heritage Festival. Communities and historic events throughout Logan County have been featured.
