Hello from my favorite place in the world and a great place to live a good life– Adairville and South Logan County. This land between the two branches of the Red River was founded by early pioneers in the 1770s and 80s. This unique area with the early forts (stations) built along both branches of the river to protect the settlers from marauding Indians and other possible dangers. Dromgoole Station became the most important of the forts and thus Adairville was born. Protected by the seven or so stations the land between the rivers thrived. Adairville officially became a town in 1833. The US Census of 1860 listed 148 souls living in the Adairville area. By 1870 it was up to 214. By 1920 the population had grown to over 763 citizens. This was a time of growth and prosperity for Adairville and south Logan County. At one point Adairville challenged both Russellville and Springfield in growth and prosperity.

Adairville served for many years as a stopping off place for people going westward. In Adairville people could buy their wagons, horses, oxen and other supplies for the long trip west. Even part of the "Trail of Tears" passed through the area. (Forced movement of Cherokee Indians to Oklahoma.)

Today the progression of history has left a unique group of bright friendly people. The churches, lovely homes, beautiful town square, award winning school. and pretty gardens make Adairville a special place to live. People still speak to one another, men hold doors for ladies, people help each other, children are polite, people respect each other and many still go to church. People still take the time to talk to each other and to the children. I hope we never loose this special thing we have in Adairville.

News: The past weekend was a big success for all the groups that were putting on events. The Red River Fish & Game Habitat had a large number of people to take part in the Catfish Tournament. The Historical Society's Bike Night saw a very large turnout of Adairville citizens. The chamber's annual yard sale was big and made profits for many folks. Country and folk music at the Cardinal Cafe went over extremely well and the 150 Anniversary of the Oak Grove Baptist Church went over big time. If they had that many people every Sunday what they could do!

The historic Red River Church is planning a series of great events during the next couple of weeks. The annual encampment is coming up and some old fashion preaching will be held. The organization now has a very good web site and offers all the local updates and schedules of their activities.

The Fish & Game Habitat will hold an open pit BBQ dinner Saturday October 24. The entertainment will be the well know "Freddie B" probably the number one Elvis Presley impersonator in the world. He was a feature on the TV show American Idol. The dinner will start at 5:30 PM. The price will only be $10. Children under 7 eat free. For more information contact patty Costello at 847-8049 or 539-4818. Officers and board members will have tickets for the event.

The award winning Adairville Senior Citizens is booming. If you are 52 or older you need to visit one day and see what is going on. The building is across from the Adairville School. Call "Dolly Adairville" 539-6051.

Adairville's Future: Gus & Lan Gunderson are one year old. They are the twins of Kristle and Guy Gunderson. Lan Walker is the very young grandfather.

Kaylee Brooke Brown was born June 22. Her proud parents are Julie Taylor Brown an Richard Brown. Grandparents Chris & Angela Jackson, Billy & Cindy Taylor and Christine & Ronnie Brown.

The Fish & Game Club will hold i's 46 annual turkey shoots starting at 1 PM Sunday November 1 and each Sunday of that month. Weather permitting the shoots may be extended into December.

Last Minute News: I just had a call from city hall. Seems like someone is again destroying property in our two parks. The old train that so many enjoy seems to have been totally destroyed. It has been turned over and heavily vandalized. In the town square park someone has apparently kicked the back off on one of the pretty new benches in the park. Do you know where your children are at night? It may have to come to a curfew at night for kids. Kids - teenagers do not need to be out on the streets in Adairville after a reasonable hour. Parents are just as guilty by neglect if they are letting their kids roam at night.

With A Smile: I love chickens. Since I was a young boy and visited my grandparents and helped feed the chickens and gather the eggs, I have been hooked. I started with my own chickens at the age of 12 and I have been raising them pretty much ever since.

A little over three years ago I took early retirement and came home. My chicken numbers have increased on a steady basis ever since. I now have some five breeds of fowl and maybe 150 chickens in particular.

Three years ago I attended a chicken show in the southern part of Tennessee and met up with some of the top araucana chicken breeders in America. These are the chickens that lay blue eggs, have no tail and have feathers (tuffs) growing out of each side of their head. At that show I expressed my strong interest in the breed and desire to buy several breeding and show specimens.

I met with rudeness, no offer of help and really a cold shoulder. I was told it would take me 10 years or more to come up with good stock and breed show winning birds. Will I came home to Adairville with a real challenge.

It did not take but a few weeks to find the best stock in America and to obtain some. In a matter of months my birds (chickens) were winning at the shows. With lots of hard work, good help (Patty Costello) and hatching lots of chicks we have come up with some outstanding araucanas.

Last week in Belvedere, Illinois, at the American Poultry Association and the Araucana Club of America National Show Adairville was a winner again.

My large fowl white araucana chicken was named the national champion of all large fowl araucanas in America and called one of the best in history. My bantam fowl white araucana was also named the number one bantam araucana in the country. I had another bantam that was named the reserve best in the country.

Adairville now has two more national winners.

It seems that all those unfriendly people at my first show now want to be my best friends and would love to obtain some chicks or hatching eggs from me. I am smiling from ear to ear.

I like a challenge. I always remained friendly and polite to those who were unfriendly to me. Now they are friendly to me. Still my main appreciation is to the lady who helped me get started. Her name is Nancy Utterback and she lives in Indiana. I smile every time I look at my chickens and what has been accomplished in just three years.

Time to go. Good night Sara, Peggy, the beautiful Angel Sisters, all the lovely ladies of Adairville and Mrs. Calabash where ever you are.
