The Logan County 4-H program has included a new Rabbit Club this year. Rabbits are fairly inexpensive to raise and require very little maintenance or space. There are rabbit breeders in Logan and surrounding counties with rabbits for sale to use as a project and to show in this year’s Logan County Fair.
The Rabbit Club is open to any youth in the county age 19 and under. The next two club meetings are on April 23rd and May 28th. Both meetings will begin at 5 p.m. and will be held at the Logan County Extension Complex, right behind the new Extension Office. At these club meetings rabbit club members learn more about raising and showing rabbits, and will begin to prepare for the upcoming Rabbit Show at the County Fair. This year’s Rabbit Show will be held on July 14th at the Extension Complex. Anyone wishing to show a rabbit at this year’s show must turn in a registration form by May 15th to the Extension Office. These forms are available at the office. Rabbits must also be tattooed before the county fair show. Dr. Jon Todd will be offering free tattoos at the rabbit club meetings or you can stop by the Logan County Animal Clinic for a free tattoo for your 4-H rabbit.
The show is open to anyone in Logan County interested in showing a rabbit. Classes will be divided by rabbit breed and rabbit age. There will also be a showmanship class divided by the age of the showman. This will be a fun and interactive way to learn more about rabbits, their behavior and put some good communication and responsibility skills into practice. It allows young people the opportunity to learn about caring for an animal which teaches responsibility. They will also learn more about communication and leadership when showing the animals. The show will allow any breed of rabbit to register. There will be prizes awarded for winners in each class. A detailed rule book for the rabbit show can be picked up at the Logan County Extension Office.
Anyone wishing to purchase a rabbit to show, to use as a 4-H project, or to simply have as a pet may call the Extension Office at 270-726-6323 for information on where to obtain a rabbit. You can also call the office if you have questions about Rabbit Club meetings or the upcoming rabbit show at the fair.
