The Russellville baseball and softball teams have headed back to the field to start the 2013 season. The weather has not cooperated with the teams but they have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming season.

The Lady Panthers are starting the year off with young talent, but head coach Greg Meacham is happy with the team he has. Last year the Lady Panthers had a rough season with no wins, but the girls are ready to get back on the field.

“I feel like we are way ahead from last year. We are very young. We have had better practices this year, we are more focused. Right now we are trying to teach the girls to compete and when they learn that then the wins will come. I think we are going to surprise people,” said Lady Panther head coach Greg Meacham. “We are getting better and working hard. I feel happy and confident with what I got. The future is bright if the girls stay with it.”

The Panther baseball team welcomes new coach Greg Shelton. Shelton has been working hard with the players and getting them used to his new coaching techniques. Last year the Panthers ended the season with a season record of 29-10 and are hoping for another successful season.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do. We haven’t been able to be consistently on the field to where I feel comfortable. I think the boys are tired of practice and ready to play. I think getting to play will be beneficial to us,” said Panther head coach Greg Shelton. “I feel like we have a good group of kids and a good core group but we can’t go very deep. We have got the talent but it is critical that we avoid injuries. I’m looking forward to the season and I want to thank the school for the support they have given me.”

The Lady Panthers will play their second game on Thursday at home against Trigg County and the Panthers will play on Thursday at Caverna.
