Logan County schools superintendent Marshall Kemp met with the Adairville School site-based decision making council this week and began the process of hiring a new principal for the school.

The council came up with a list of nine qualifications they would like to see the next principal meet.

Those criteria were:

• Is a strong instructional leader.
• Acts with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner.
• Has high expectations for all stakeholders and places students first.
• Believes in and will carry out discipline techniques that provide a safe, positive learning environment and will also promote student empowerment, self-control, and self-discipline.
• Welcomes input from others.
• Models good communication among all the stakeholders of the school community: parents, students, teachers, administrators, and the community at large.
• Handles all people with respect and dignity.
• Advocates, nurtures, and sustains a school culture and instructional program conducive to learning and student achievement.
• Empowers and raises up leaders among students and faculty.

The council will be meeting again on Tuesday and Kemp will be presenting a list of applicants for the council to start looking at.

As of Wednesday, there were at least 20 applicants for the position.

“I think there are some good candidates in that group,” Kemp said. “Whether there are enough for the council, I can’t say, but there are for sure some good ones.”

Kemp said the council would like to interview candidates the week of April 8 and then evaluate the finalists using the selection process the following week.

“We’d like to select the next principal by the end of April,” Kemp said.

Former Logan County schools administrator Mike Hurt has been serving as the school’s interim principal since the untimely death of the school’s previous principal, Paul Sansom.

Kemp said that Hurt is not a candidate for the permanent position.

“The best practice guidelines says that the interim principal is not supposed to be a candidate for the job,” Kemp said.
