I googled a stanza of my grandmother's poem, "Magic of Prayer" and received tons of hits - including yours- with the author noted as “Anonymous”. Her name is Frieda Josephine Hawes. She was one of the loveliest people to have walked the earth. In addition to being a poet, she was an accomplished musician, gardener, cook, mother and grandmother. She died in 1989 at the age of 80. She would be thrilled to know that her poem was a source of comfort to others.

Here it is in its entirety:

The Magic of Prayer

When the trials of this life make you weary
And your troubles seem too much to bear,
There’s a wonderful solace and comfort
In the silent communion of prayer…

When you search for the sun without ceasing
And the showers continue to fall;
There’s a heavenly lift in this wonderful gift
That God has extended to all…

From the magic of prayer, there comes power
That will minimize all of your care;
And you’ll gather new hope when you’re able to cope
With the troubles that once brought despair

So lift up your heart to the heavens
To the Friend that will ease your despair…
Your heartache will cease with the magic of peace
In the silent communion of prayer.
