Logan County High School senior baseball standout Dustin Cartas signed a National Letter of Intent on Tuesday to play his college baseball at Murray State University next year.
Cartas chose the Racers after making up his mind during his sophomore season that Murray was the place for him.
“I’ve had my mind made up since my sophomore season when we played in a tournament up there,” Cartas said. “This is an exciting time for me.”
Cartas thanked his parents, coaches and teammates for helping him achieve his dream of playing college baseball.
LCHS coach Ethan Meguiar said that Cartas has been a good student and good example for the baseball program.
“He has taken care of business in all aspects,” Meguiar said. “He has a 4.0 GPA and scored a 30 on the ACT. And when you take care of business like that in the classroom, these are the kind of choices you get to make.”
On the field, Cartas has been nothing short of spectacular for the Cougars.
He has been a starter at catcher since his seventh grade year. During that time he has practically rewritten the program’s record books.
He has a career .427 batting average and has never hit below .400 in any of his seasons. He has 184 hits in 535 plate appearances with only 17 strikeouts throughout his career. Cartas also has hit 24 home runs and collected 152 RBI.
Cartas has been named to the all district team in each of the past five seasons and played on the junior West All-Star team last season.
Meguiar, who is entering his 17th season as Cougars baseball coach said that Cartas is just the second player he has had sign to play NCAA Division I ball and is the fifth in school history.
