The Adairville city council is looking to change a decision that was made by a previous council regarding the amount of insurance a contractor must have in order to do construction or repair work for the city.

About three years ago, the Adairville council voted to require contractors to carry at least $1 million in liability insurance in order to work for the city.

At last week’s city council meeting, Becky Tinch made a motion to hire someone to fix the sidewalk in front of Barnes Insurance.

Her motion passed unanimously, but in later discussion council member Bill Steen said he did not believe the contractor had $1 million in liability insurance.

Tinch then rescinded her motion, saying that the rule about having $1 million in insurance needs to be changed.

“It needs to be looked at,” Tinch said. “I would like to see it brought down to maybe $500,000. $250,000 is probably too minimal and the million is probably too much. We’ve got to keep local people working for us.”

Steen said that he thinks there should be a tiered structure so that if the job costs over $100,000 the amount of insurance goes back up to $1 million.

No action was taken, but the council decided to discuss it at the February meeting.

Also at last week’s meeting, the council voted to have Matthews Construction replace the roof on the the community house for $6,250. The roof will come with a 15-year warranty.

The council also voted to make Vernon Osborne the new city park manager.

Osborne was the only candidate to turn in an application, but former council member Tony Nichols was also discussed because he had expressed interest in the job.

The position will be filled immediately.

“It needs to start now so that we can get word out to the kids about baseball and softball signups,” mayor Donna Blake said. “If we don’t, those kids will be going to play in Auburn or Russellville instead of here.”
