Happy New Years from Adairville, Kentucky! Usually I write my column bare footed but not tonight. It is too dog gone cold!!!!! May have to wait till spring before this old boy goes bare foot again. My floors are too cold for me to be going without shoes just now. Richard Taylor can do it but not me. (He has nearly 50 years of experience.)

Don Neagle was kind enough to have me on his radio show on Wednesday morning at 9:05 a.m. WRUS Radio in Russellville has aired my yearly predictions and results for several years now. My results of correct answers has run 80% to 90% each year. I may well run 100% in 2013 but hope I will not. Listed below are my 2013 predictions as announced on WRUS:

2013 Predictions

1. Although I saw very few “Wooley Worms” this fall and only a couple of dark ones, I do believe that this is going to be a cold winter with several snows and a bad ice storm.

2. I believe there will be at least two very bad tornadoes to hit the state during 2013. One in the eastern part of the state and another in the western part of Kentucky. (There is a very good chance of several hitting in the state on one or two days in the spring.) There may be a very bad one to blow in from Tennessee and if so it will be very destructive.

3. At least three well known organizations in Logan County will receive significant financial grants in 2013. This will be of great help to all three. This money will go on to help many people.

4. Three living past US Presidents will face serious health issues in 2013. One of these and possibly two will die.

5. Hilary Clinton will face serious illness but will recover. Her stature in the eyes of the American public and the world will continue to grow. She will continue to deny the possibility of running for the U.S. Presidency but will reconsider later on.

6. The new leadership of North and South Korea come from two families that have long been antagonist. The grand father of the young President Kim of North Korea ordered the assassination of the mother of newly elected President Park of South Korea. In spite of this I believe the two leaders will try to move their countries towards much better relations.

7. The civil war in Syria will continue to escalate. The US and it’s allies will intensify their efforts and support of the rebels. The dictatorship will fall.

8. The middle-east will continue to be very volatile. The populations in Bahrain, Kuwait, Yemen and Egypt will continue to agitate. Many will die.

9. A world famous US athlete will die unexpectedly. They will be missed by the world.

10. The economic outlook of the US and Logan County will improve. Jobs will continue to increase. Home sales, economic development, real estate, banks and investments will climb.

My good friend Juanita Silvey died this week. She was a remarkable woman that had strong opinions, loved her son Barry and his family and distinguished herself with writing for the N-D&L for parts of eight decades.

Juanita started writing for the paper back in the early 1940’s by assisting her mother-in-law. Eventually she took over full time writing the column about Dunmore and it’s citizens. She use to tell that she was going to write for just a couple of years or until World War II was over. Then it went into the 50’s and she was going to quit when the Korean Conflict was over. Then it was the beginning of the 60’s and she was going to write until the Vietnam Conflict was over. Then suddenly it was the 80’s and 90’s and she was only going to write until Desert Storm was over. Then it was into the New Millennium and she was going to “retire” when the Iraq War was over and so it went. Her last columns appeared during 2012 and then she fell ill.

Juanita was a great lady and had a long and colorful fun career writing her columns for the paper. Never shy to give her opinion. She either liked you or she did not. One thing is for sure. She loved Dunmor and reported faithfully on the goings and comings of her community longer than anyone had ever done or probably ever will do in the years to come. We will truly miss this very special lady.

It is official. Adairville has a new mayor and city council I attended the swearing in of the new body this past Monday at 12 Noon at the Adairville City Hall. It was actually very festive with spirits high. After three attempts Donna Blake was elected by a land slide of 73 percent of the electorate. Following a few comments about her favorite passages from the Bible she pledged to work hard for the citizens of Adairville and to work to bring the town back. She also pledged to work to bring a grocery back to town. Hooray for all the newly elected officials.

By now most of you may have heard that Sheila Haley, owner of the Tenn-Tucky State Line Tavern won her law suite against Logan County. Judge Gill overturned Judge Logan Chick’s denial of an entertainment license. He said the county action was a violation of the state constitution. It is my understanding that the tavern plans to have a big opening night on January 11 at 7 p.m. I guess the quote that I will most remember, out of all of this, is that of Mrs. Hailey’s attorney Alan Simpson stated, “Sheila’s Logan Chicks will be dancing come January 11.” (You have to think on that statement!)

With that statement I think I will leave my With A Smile off this week.

So I will say good night Mrs. Logan Chick, Mrs. Wallace Whittaker, Rep. Martha Jane King, Mrs. Don Neagle, Mrs. Joe Ross, the wives of the Adairville ministers, Mrs. Nannette King, Mrs. Della Jackson, Mrs. Virginia Lloyd, Mrs. Alberta Sanders, Mrs. Carole McKinney, Mrs. Izabell “the baker”, Mrs. Wilna Clynard, Mrs. Robert Nicodemus, Mrs. Bettye Finch, Mrs. Peggy Brewer, Mrs. Marla Sircy, Mrs. Jim Wilkerson, Mrs. Marjorie Hesson, Mrs. Jim Trimble, Mrs. Cecil Prince, Mrs. John Lee Barnes, Mrs. June Trimble, Mrs. Bertie Angel and Mrs. Calabash where ever you are.
