Logan County Solid Waste Coordinator Dwight Cockrill says the county trash pickup crews find a lot of strange things along the roadsides while picking up litter, however, he would never have imagined what they found one October day on the old 68-80 West.

Cockrill has crews of inmates clean up the roadsides in Logan County several days a month. They pick up everything from restaurant trash, bottles and cans to larger items like mattresses, tires and car batteries. They have even picked up a bathroom sink. But finding an illegal drug growing out in plain sight is something you don’t see everyday.

Cockrill told Fiscal Court Tuesday that one of the crew had located marijuana plants, several of them in fact, alongside the road.

“I thought it was strange that they would be out there in the open like that,” said Cockrill, who doesn’t believe it was a result of throwing out seeds randomly on the side of the road. The plants were lined up.

Cockrill reported there were two patches one down from the other. He said he called the sheriff’s department immediately.

Along with telling about the marijuana find, Cockrill reported that October’s pickup was one of the largest in some time. The crews picked up 65.4 miles of roadway, collected 742 bags of trash, four tires, two mattresses, a TV, a car battery, a car spoiler, a mud flap, a fender, and a bathroom sink.

They picked up trash on Peyton Street, 68-80 East Auburn, Hwy. 79 South, Stevenson Mill, Corinth, 68-80 Bypass, Old 68-80 East, Old 431, Hwy. 431 South, Nashville Road, 106 West, Hwy. 103, Liberty Church Road, Auburn Richelieu, Stephanie Road, Miles Road, Elkton Road, Earl Road, and Hopkinsville Road over the bridge.
