The Russellville Police Department, along with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety will again be conducting a “Drive Sober of Get Pulled Over” campaign this holiday season.

“Hopefully this will deter someone from partaking in that kind of behavior,” said Russellville police chief Victor Shifflet. “That’s why we always want to get the word out that we are doing this. Be sure an wear your seat belt and obey the traffic laws, and whatever you do, don’t drink and drive. It’s always important but even more so at Christmas time. You don’t want to hurt or kill yourself or anyone else’s family members, because Christmas is the season for families.”

As part of the “Drive Sober of Get Pulled Over” mobilization, the Russellville Police Department will be increasing traffic enforcement throughout the city beginning on Dec. 12 and concluding on January 1.

A federal grant will pay for overtime for Russellville police to be out on the roads even more during this period.

In 2011, there were 5,639 alcohol and drug-related crashes in Kentucky. These crashes caused injuries to 3,082 and took the lives of 150 people.

Also this holdiday season, the RPD wants to remind citizens of a few safety tips to remember.

• Make sure your car is locked, with all windows rolled up, when parked. If possible, park in a well-lit and highly-visible area.
• Be alert. Remain watchful of your environment and take notice of suspicious activity. Check you vehicle and those parked nearby before you enter.
• Conceal your valuables and shopping bags, preferably in the trunk of your car.
• Shop with friends. A large group is less suseptible to crime.

The Russellville Police Department will be increasing patrol of businesses such as banks, convenience stores and shopping centers during the holiday season.
