Both the cities of Adairville and Auburn will be getting new mayors after Tuesday’s general election.

Donna Blake defeated incumbent Jim Wilkerson, who was seeking a third term in Adairville, and Mike Hughes won in Auburn and will be taking over for Dewey Roche, who chose not to run again.

This was the third time Blake has ran against Wilkerson to be mayor of Adairville. The last time four years ago, she was defeated by just nine votes.

But this time around was a completely different result with Blake getting getting 76 percent of the vote.

“I guess the third times the charm,” Blake said after the election.

She got 277 votes, while Wilkerson received 88.

“I was overwhelmed with the margin,” Blake said. “I never dreamed it would be that big.”

Blake said she thought the Adairville voters were ready for a change.

“I think they probably felt like they gave him eight years and we’ve lost a lot of things in eight years,” Blake said.

Blake said that she received a congratulatory call from Wilkerson soon after the results came in.

“I appreciated that,” she said.

The council Blake will be working with includes current council members Becky Tinch, Danny Finch, Art Violette and Bill Steen. Two newcomers were voted onto the council, Michelle Trimble and Brent Johnson.

Three others also ran for the council - Dick Dickerson, Patricia Mayes and Patty Costello. Dickerson and Mayes each got 179 votes apiece, placing them in a tie for seventh. Steen was sixth with 207 votes.

Tinch was the top votegetter with 314 votes. Finch had the second most with 273.

“I think I’ve got a great council,” Blake said. “The four incumbents, I have always worked well with, and two new ones will be good additions.”

In Auburn, Hughes received 364 votes in the race for mayor. Wayne Thomas got 118 votes and Maxie Rittenberry got 26.

“I’m a bit overwhelmed by the confidence of the people of Auburn in me,” Hughes said. “Now that I am mayor, I’ll make the same promise I made while I was campaigning and that is that I’ll work hard and do the best I can.”

Hughes spent six years on the city council before running for mayor.

“I think Auburn has a very bright future,” he said. “This town has great people that are always willing to volunteer or help on anything that you need.”

The new Auburn council includes current council members Steve Montgomery, Rex Evans Jessie Duer and Bobby Price and newcomers Shane Johnson and Norma Kutzman.

Montgomery got the most votes with 341 and Evans was second with 334.

Three others ran for the Auburn council but did not make it - James Gregory, Gayle Gregory and Thelma Cottrell.

“I think that’s good for more than one reason,” Hughes said. “They’re all good people - all nine candidates were - and there was not a huge turnover. That’s good because a lot of times there’s a learning curve when you first get on to the council.”

In the Russellville city council race, all six current council members were reelected.

Sandra Kinser was the top votegetter with 1,711 votes. Jimmy Davenport was second with 1,700. The others reelected included Jack Whipple, Pat Bell, Darlene Gooch and Bill Decker.

Three others ran but did not get enough votes to make the council. They were Doug Nash, Marvinia Neblett and Lora Murphy.

In Lewisburg, only three people were on the ballot for its city council - Shirley Woodward, Melanie Palmgren and Jeff Laster. The other three seats were decided by write-in votes. Jason Wade Harper got 24 votes, Anna Marie Ostler got four votes and Betty Gibson got two votes. Lucian Hunt also registered to run as a write-in, but received only one vote.

The only other contested race on the ballot was for Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors North Logan Conservation District. The four elected to those positions are Anthony Woodall, R.W. Bobby Brown, Ernie Ezell and Warren Stuart.

Uncontested races on the ballot included: Commonwealth Attorney Gail Guiling, Circuit Clerk Sherry Wilkins, District 3 magistrate Barry Joe Wright, Logan County school board members Phillip Baker, Ralph Cropper and Johnny Dawson and Russellville Independent School Board members Davonna Page and Phillip West.
