Hello from beautiful Adairville, Kentucky, sitting on the “big island” between the north and south branches of the Red River. Possibly, one of the oldest permanently settled areas in the entire nation. Archaeologists have uncovered human remains and artifacts that date back some 11,000 years. They have also uncovered prehistoric animal bones that date back as long or longer. Now the archaeologists believe that further digging is going to prove that man was present in the area and in Cook’s Cave, particularly as far back as 18,000 to 21,000 years. This very fantastic and historic cave is located a few miles east of Adairville near the south branch of the Red River.

Mrs. Genevieve Savage was the last private owner of the cave. She promoted the cave, looked after it, and did all she could to gain proper recognition for the cave during her lifetime. Eventually the ownership of the cave went to a private cave organization in the far west and later to a university in the local Kentucky area.

Now the county is taking control of this historic property and plans to allow the Adairville/South Logan County Historical Society to take over the management of the property. The property is being updated, cleaned up, possibly a kiosk will be added, new signs giving the property’s history, and maybe even a small tourist center could be built. Time will tell what will happen to the property.

Wayne Stratton is heading up the efforts to regain the cave, the cleanup campaign, and over seeing the protection of the cave from poachers/robbers. I have been asked to serve on the cave committee and am pleased and honored to do so.

NEWS - Judge William Fugua, one of the big cash winners at the Red River Fish & Game Club’s annual fish fry, has indicated that he is going to donate his winnings back to the club to help pay for a gazebo or some sort of nice shelter to be located on the banks of James Lake.

Nannette Starks King flew out to south Texas on Tuesday. She is visiting with important specialists in the fight against cancer. Several of the local churches have taken up collections to help Nannette with her large hospital costs. What a good and kind thing to do.

Mt. Herman Baptist Church is honoring Rev. William Washington for his many years in the ministry in the Adairville area.

Dripping Springs Baptist Church founded about 1857 is celebrating it’s 155 year of service.

The “431 Grill” just north of town on Hwy 431 is bringing back nit’s famous hamburger deal. On Tuesdays hamburgers will sell for $2. This will be each Tuesday. Fridays will feature fried cat fish. Pizzas are now being offered after 2 p.m. Call ins and take outs are welcomed.

The best little gift shop in the county is located in Adairville on South Main across from the BP Station. The owners, Nancy and Tim Watson, offer a fantastic gift shop. I go in and want to come home with half the store.

There is a new UK room with some fantastic items. (I want the score board clock. It comes in two sizes.) There is an Elvis Presley room. It has books, pictures, records, throws, and lots of things related to the “King.” There is great jewelry, calendars, crafts, old thing,s and new things.

There is also a 50 percent off room offering big mark ups on everything. The shop also has beautiful candles for sale. Many are on sale. There is something for every one.

Tim and Nancy have two military sons that they are very proud of. One is Sergeant Major Tom Watson, who is just home from Afghanistan and who was recently awarded the Bronze Star.Lock jaw

The other son is Tim Watson Jr., who has recently retired and plans on a second career.

Please support this shop. It is one of the few we still have and the quality and prices are so good.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK - Why does the Bethel Dipper, great food place in Russellville, never have proper size straws. Order a milkshake and you will get lockjaw trying to drink it out of the tiny straw!

ELKTON FESTIVAL - Elkton is having their big fall festival this weekend. I plan to have a booth there. Will be selling cinnamon roasted pecans and almonds. Come see me.

All for now. Good night Roger and Ronnie Coleman, the members of Calvary Baptist Church, Sweet Bertie Angel and Mrs. Calabash where ever you are.
