Have a great week and be good to one another.

Notes from Schochoh: When I began writing this column I made the decision not to write about religion or politics. I felt there was no place for those two subjects in a community news column. I changed my mind last week when Lewisburg columnist Lillian Helton made the following statement: “I am changing the way I vote this year. I want a real American in the White House. The key word being White house.” My grandfather used to say “the more you stir crap the more it stinks”, so common sense should tell me to keep my mouth shut and let that insidiously racial remark pass. But Irish statesman, author and political theorist Edmond Burke said “All it takes for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing.”

For the record, I am a cradle born, card carrying, registered liberal Democrat and I am not ashamed of that fact. I voted for President Obama in 2008 and I intend to vote for him again in 2012. Like many Obama supporters, I have not agreed with some decisions he has made during his first term, but overall I believe he has been a good President, given what he has had to work with. He walked into a big steaming pile of dung left by his predecessor that included an economy on the brink of depression, two wars, Wall Street running amok and an auto industry ready to collapse. President Obama made the tough decisions. He added regulations to the financial industry, he ended the war in Iraq, the auto industry is thriving and Osama bin Laden is at the bottom of the ocean. The President accomplished all of this while battling an intractable Congress, whose Senate leader, Mitch McConnell, made it quite plain that his goal and that of the Republican Party was to make President Obama a “one term President”. If the President said the sky was blue and the grass was green, Congress disagreed with him. President Obama has fought an uphill battle with grace and dignity.

President Obama is a “real” American and he has the birth certificate to prove it. How many Presidents have ever been asked to show their birth certificates? None have, to my knowledge, because it is a ridiculous and offensive question to ask. The President’s political opponents grasp at straws by accusing him of not being American, of being “elitist”, of not being “one of us”. I have only been able to conclude that his opponents make these accusations because they will not come out and say what is really on their minds and that is “We don’t want an African-American President.”

I mistakenly thought that the war against racism had been fought when I was a child. Apparently there are still racists walking about, confused, much like Japanese soldiers who wandered out of the jungle years after World War II was over.

President Obama is smart, thoughtful and capable. Call me crazy, but I want the President of the United States to be the smartest person in the room. We all saw where eight years of stupidity got us and do we really want to go back to that America? I don’t. I want a President who wants to move forward and accomplish things that will keep America strong, no matter what his skin color.
