The City of Russellville recently received a safety grant from the Kentucky League of Cities Insurance Services (KLCIS) for $2,985. The grant monies will be spent for traffic lighting to halt traffic so the firemen and equipment can enter north Main Street when responding to call outs. It was also spent for KMESHA training as well.

When the city moved its fire department to the old Chrysler building located beside McDonalds last year, getting the fire trucks out onto Main Street was a concern. However, the idea of putting a specific light to halt traffic when a call comes in settled those concerns.

“We use every opportunity to make our city safer,” said Russellville Mayor Mark Stratton, referring to the grant award. Stratton said that in these uncertain times, grants such as this one are a practical way to make the city’s budget go further, as well as provide opportunities that will enhance public safety.

The Kentucky League of Cities has awarded in excess of $3 million since the Safety Grant program started in 1999. In addition to the city of Russellville, 109 other KLCIS members recei8ved safety grants. A total of $328,419 was awarded in this year’s program.

The awarded funds will go towards safety training, slip resistant shoes, sidewalk repairs, confined space equipment, law enforcement accreditation fees, and other equi9pment to improve public and employee safety, as well as the purchase of classes through the KLCIS Online University.

Fire Chief Billy Poole is also very grateful for the grant.
