Nathan Thompson was named the new athletic director for Russellville High School.

Thompson had recently served as the school’s soccer coach and is currently also heading up the boys’ and girls’ golf teams.

“This was something I had talked to the administration about, because it was a position I was interested in,” Thompson said. “It just fell into place and we ironed out a few details and I accepted the position.”

Thompson will oversee all the school’s sports teams despite not being a teacher at the school.

“That was a concern the administration had, but I’m pretty flexible with my work schedule,” said Thompson, who works at First Southern National Bank. “I’m in and out of the office quite a bit and I can always take phone calls and answer emails.”

He is looking forward to helping out with each of the school’s sports.

“Through coaching, you’re limited to the sports you are working with,” Thompson said. “This gives me a larger platform to make a difference with all the programs and the kids and continue the success that we’ve had.”

In the meantime, Thompson said he is enjoying spending time coaching the RHS golf squads.

“I’m looking forward to the season,” he said. “I love golf and have been playing the last 10-12 years. I really want to help them improve their games. I don’t want to be one of those coaches that just drives around in a cart.”
