The Russellville Fire Department was expecting to have a busy Fourth of July with the extremely dry conditions and the use of fireworks, but it didn’t turn out to be too bad.

Fire cheif Billy Poole said his department didn’t have any calls on Independence Day, which was a little surprising.

“It was actually pretty quiet for us,” Poole said. “It surprised me a little bit, because I could hear them going off all over the city.”

Fireworks were set off by many despite a burn ban that was declared by mayor Mark Stratton.

“I think the police department had a pretty busy night chasing after them all,” Poole said. “I think that people were more careful than usual because of the ban though, and they didn’t set anything on fire.”

That wasn’t the case last weekend when the fire department had two deal with two house fires and several grass fires that were started by the careless use of fireworks.

There was a county-wide burn ban in effect for all of Logan County - including the cities of Russellville, Lewisburg, Auburn and Adairville - and the Logan County Sheriff’s Department also had its hands full responding to complaints of people setting off fireworks when they weren’t supposed to.

The county police department responded to 38 total fireworks complaints on July 4. No citations were written, just verabl warnings, said captain Steven Stratton.

“We got a lot more complaints because people were calling because of the ban,” Stratton said.

The burn ban is still in effect for all of Logan County and it will likely take quite a bit of rain to get it lifted.

“It’ll take a good two or three days or rain to make it not quite so dangerous,” Poole said. “If we were to just get a little storm, the ground will just suck it up and it wouldn’t change much at all.”

That could happen early next week as forecasts are calling for a good chance of storms on Sunday and Monday.
