This past weekend Russellville City Firefighters spent Saturday and Sunday working on their Hazardous Materials Skills.

State Fire Rescue Instructor Ronnie Stinson taught an eight hour classroom session Saturday, June 2 on Haz-Mat Ops (Hazardous Material Operations). The classroom portion was a refresher for some and new to others. Firefighters were taught about different chemicals and how they react in different situations and how to safely control those situations.

Sunday firefighters went to the City Training Center and practiced building an earthen dam, diverting and diking material as well as decontaminating each other. They also built an overflow/underflow dam so clean water can still flow while containing the hazardous material.

“These guys gave up one of the nicest weekends we’ve had in a while to sharpen there skills and be better prepared in the event of a Hazardous Material Incident in the city,” said Fire Chief Billy Poole.
