It was the first-ever win for the Pioneers over the Lady Toppers, as WKU has won all 10 previous meetings coming in. The loss dropped WKU to a 11-8 and 5-4 in the Sun Belt, while DU improved to 10-9 and 5-3 in the league.
After scoring the final seven points of the first half to take a 35-28 lead into intermission, the Pioneers hit six of their first eight shots of the second half, and scored the first eight points to open up a 46-30 lead on a Andie Mason three with 15:33 to play. The run ballooned to 22-4 on back-to-back Ashley Robinson baskets as the lead stretched to 50-32 – the largest margin of the afternoon.
WKU – which shot just 24 percent in the second half – got no closer that 12 points the rest of the way as Denver was able to hold a 46-27 advantage on the glass to help in the victory.
The first half was a game of runs by both clubs, as the Lady Toppers spotted Denver the first seven points of the contest. After a quick timeout, the Lady Toppers came back with an 11-3 run of their own to take their first lead when a Teranie Thomas jumper made it an 11-10 game five minutes in.
Leads were hard to come by for WKU in the first half, however, as it was on top for just 33 seconds in the first 20 minutes of action. The only other lead of the half came when a Hope Brown three made it a 17-15 game with 11:14 on the clock. But DU came right back as five straight points by Nnenna Akotaobi sparked a 13-0 Pioneer run. In fact, Denver knocked down three of their six first-half threes during that run as a pair of Celeno Otero treys capped off the run and made it a 28-17 game with 8:05 to go before intermission.
The Lady Toppers remain on the road as they visit Jonesboro, Ark., on Wednesday to take on Arkansas State at 7:05 p.m.
