The 11- and 12-year-old Logan County-Russellville Little League All-Stars got their season off with a bang last weekend in Morgantown. They went 3-0 to win the area tournament and secured a seed in the district tournament, which gets under way today in Owensboro.
On Friday Logan County faced off against the host Butler County. Butler County jumped off to an early lead scoring one run in the top half of the first while Logan County went 1, 2, 3, but after the first inning starting pitcher Torin Graham settled down and pitched a gem. He struck out the side in the top half of the second. In the bottom of the second things went great for Logan, Corey Wright lead off the inning with a double and then Joe Holliday walked to set the stage for Zach Denney, who hit a single in the right center gap which scored both Wright and Holliday. From there Logan controlled the game. The third and fourth innings were huge innings for Logan as they were able to score seven runs in the two innings. Blake Gettings hit a two-run homer in the third and Graham hit a three-run homer in the fourth. Barrett Croslin had two hits in those innings leading them off each time. Logan won the game 9-3. Graham pitched five innings and gave up one run, on one hit, walked two and struck out 11.
On Saturday, Logan County faced Todd County and Logan picked up where they left off the previous night. Wright started pitching for Logan and shut them down in order in the top half of the first. In the bottom half of the inning Logan put on a hitting clinic. They sent 15 people to the plate and scored 13 runs. Croslin had a inside the park home run and a triple in the inning. In the second and third innings it would be more of the same from Logan. They ended the game scoring 33 runs on 23 hits. Graham and Gettings each hit their second homerun of the tournament. Wright and Ian Woodall each hit their first home runs of the tournament. Joe Holliday scored five runs in the game while Croslin, Matt Harper, Graham, Gettings and Caleb Bruner each scored four. Logan won the game 33-1 in four innings. Wright went the distance on the mound giving up one run, four hits, no walks and five strikeouts.
On Sunday, Logan had a 2-0 record and faced Franklin, which was also perfect. For the first time in the tournament, Logan was the visiting team on the scoreboard and they scratched first when Graham hit his third third home run of the tournament. Unfortunately for Logan County, that is all they come up with in the first three innings. But good pitching by Harper kept Franklin off the scoreboard. In the fourth inning Graham lead off the inning for Logan County and Franklin decided to pitch to best hitter in the tournament.
That turned out to be a bad decision. Graham once again hit a solo home run to give him four in three games.
Holliday then walked but was thrown out stealing. Gettings and Woodall each singled and Gettings would score the 3rd and final run for Logan County. The game ended with a 3-0 win in favor of Logan County.
Harper was stellar on the mound as he pitched a complete game one-hit shut out. Harper pitched six innings gave up no runs on one hit and no walks while striking out six.
With the win, Logan County qualified for the district tournament. They will start off by playing Ohio County on today at 5 p.m., Saturday they will face off against Bowling Green East at 7 p.m. and Sunday they will face Hancock County at 7 p.m.
All games will be played at Country Heights Elementary.
