Logan Countians looking for a place to kick back and enjoy some fireworks this Fourth of July weekend don't have to look very far. Once again, Crossroads Church is hosting their Freedom Celebration. Crossroads (located next to the city-county park) invites everyone to bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy fellowship, food, praise and worship followed by one of the largest fireworks shows in Logan County.

The Crossroads celebration will be held Sunday, July 6 beginning at 5 p.m. with fireworks at dark. In addition to the singing and food, there will also be inflatables and face painting for the children.

As part of the celebration this year, Crossroads wants to honor the men and women who have or are serving our country through military service. A Wall of Honor will be at the Chrysler Building parking lot (next to McDonald's) this week. Organizers would like to have a picture and information about those who have or are serving posted on the wall. They want to honor as many people as possible.

Stop by the wall and post a non-returnable photograph of your soldier next to a 3x5 index card with the following information: Name (indicate in honor of or in memory of),

branch of service and campaigns/wars fought; date of service (if soldier died in the line of duty, please include date and place of sacrifice to country), and if soldier is in active duty include mailing address (optional). Also include your phone number.

On Saturday, July 5, the Wall of Honor will be moved to Crossroads Church. If you did not get your special soldier's photograph and information posted by then, please bring it to the Freedom Celebration. For more information on the wall, Louise Holloman at 726-7009 or Teresa McPherson at 726-4022.

If you are looking for something to do on July 4, there are many options both here in Logan County and around the region.

For the children, Bob and Joyce Guion will be hosting their annual Fourth of July Kiddie Parade. Children are encouraged to decorate their bikes, scooters and other ride-on vehicles in red, white and blue and make their way through downtown Russellville. The parade starts at the Guion's home at 106 W. 8th Street at 10 a.m. and will end there as well. Everyone is invited.

Downtown Russellville will also be the sight of the Independence Day Celebration at 10:30 a.m. on the square on Friday, July 4. Representative Sheldon Baugh will be the guest speaker and Logan County Dance will present a “Tribute to America” routine. For more info, call Parks and Rec at 726-5033.

In nearby Bowling Green there are several options, including two events with large fireworks displays.

The Star-Spangled Spectacular will be held on the campus of Western Kentucky University at the Guthrie Tower. For the last several years, this event has grown in popularity. Families begin picnicking at around 6 p.m. with blankets spread all around the field just down from Downing University Center. The Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra and Choir will be set up near the Guthrie Tower and will perform at around 8 p.m. At dark, the fireworks will begin. The Star-Spangled Spectacular is free.

If you want to get your Fourth of July off to an early start, the 37th Annual Thunderfest Independence Day Celebration will be held Thursday, July 3 at the National Corvette Museum Amphitheater. (Rain date is July 5.) Gates open at 3 p.m. and activities begin at 4 p.m. There will be childrens attractions such as inflatables, tethered hot air balloon rides, music, food vendors and other entertainment until about 9 p.m. when the fireworks begin. Admission is $5 per person or $15 per carload. Proceeds benefit various local children's organizations.
