Harold Tackett, who just completed a successful season as the girls' basketball coach at Betsy Layne High School in Floyd County, was hired to replace Brandon Fisher. Fisher left LCHS after just one season to pursue other coaching opportunities.
This past season, the Betsy Layne Lady Bobcats finished 18-10 overall, winning the District 58 championship and going to the semifinals of the 15th Region Tournament.
Tackett has been teaching and coaching for the past 18 years in Floyd County.
“Some of my commitments have changed and my wife and I have always liked western Kentucky,” Tackett said. “We were just looking for a change and a different career path.”
In addition to coaching the Betsy Layne High School girls' team, Tackett compiled an impressive 173-19 record as the boys' coach at Betsy Layne Middle School
Logan County is coming off a touch season where the Cougars finished a Fourth Region worst 2-25.
“I've always liked a challenge,” Tackett said. “Logan County has all the pieces and parts to be successful. They've got a great AD and administration. I just think it's going to be an interesting time. We're going to roll our sleeves up and work hard and get things turned around.”
Even though Logan County hasn't had a lot of success recently, the school does have some good boys' basketball tradition - and that doesn't hurt.
“I never really look in the past much, but they've got a good foundation of success there,” Tackett said. “These players need to decide their own history, but knowing you can use that past tradition as a reference is definitely a positive though.”
In addition to coaching boys' and girls' basketball, Tackett has also coached volleyball, softball, golf, cross country and football. He has also won region championships in golf and cross country.
“I've coached both extensively and different sports both boys and girls and one thing I have learned is that the xs and os are easy,” Tackett said. “The challenging thing is getting the commitment and building those attitudes of being competitive and successful.
New Logan County principal Casey Jaynes said he would like to thank the selection committee for their time and efforts in this process. Members of the selection committee included Hugh McReynolds, Athletic Director LCHS; Scot MacAllister, girls basketball coach LCHS; Barrett Nelson, Principal of Lewisburg Middle School and Alisa Todd, parent representative.
