Students in Mrs. Jeri Taylor's kindergarten class at Olmstead Elementary/Middle School are learning at a young age the advantages of daily exercise.

This class of nineteen 5-year-olds implemented classroom-based physical activity into their class curriculum by walking to “Disney World” a destination of 750 miles they reached the week of April 21.

Equipped with sunglasses and water bottles, the students walked 15 minutes a day, or when weather permitted, with each student representing one mile. This physical activity has been included in math lessons and journal entries. The class is now walking 895 miles to Watertown, New York, the home of their kindergarten e-mail and Blog pals.

Mrs. Taylor states that the class looked forward to their daily walks and often asked if they could walk in the school gym during the winter. The class has learned the importance of daily exercise in their lives and that no one is ever too young or too old to incorporate physical activity into their routines.

The students' journals tell the reader that walking strengths bones and keeps them healthy.

A celebration party, complete with Mickey and Minnie Mouse ears, was held on April 30. Nutritious snacks were provided by Gordon Food Service and Jamye Stokes, Logan County Schools Food Service Director.
