A suspect was arrested on April 23 in connection with a money scam that hit Lewisburg's elderly community in early April.
Fred Stanley was taken into custody in Central City and is being charged with Theft by Deception under $300.
It is suspected that Stanley came to the home of elderly Lewisburg residents telling them sad stories about his mother and asking for money. He received $80 on two separate occasions. One couple thought he looked familiar and wrote him a check for $80. The man later cashed the check at a grocery where he was not required to show identification.
Lewisburg Police Chief Alan Alsup warns residents to be aware of people who come to your home or telephone asking for money. Even if the stories they tell are sad. “Never let a stranger into your home,” said Detective Len Embry of the Logan County Sheriff's Department. “If someone comes to your door, tells you a sad story and asks for money, the best thing to do is refer them to one of the many agencies around town that can offer assistance,” said Embry.
Lewisburg Chief of Police Alan Alsup said he got a tip about Stanley, who had just gotten out of jail.
“I went to Muhlenberg County and met with the Chief of Police there. We went to see Mr. Stanley who allowed us to take his photograph,” said Alsup who later used the photo to show the victim and store clerk who cashed the victim's check.
After a positive ID was made, Stanley was then arrested. “Apparently he had been doing this for years,” said Alsup adding, “Stanley has been arrested before for receiving money under false pretenses.”
Alsup said people need to be careful when strangers approach them especially at their own homes. If you become suspicious then chances are it is for a reason and you need to follow those feelings.
