Nationally, enrollment in summer classes has been on the decline for several years. Many students spend their time during the summer working or just taking a break from the rigors of college coursework. Last year, WKU summer student enrollment increased for the first time in three years to 6,247.
So far 1,595 sections are being offered this summer, with more courses than ever being offered online. Classes are also available on WKU's main campus, WKU's Bowling Green Community College at the South Campus, and at the three Regional Centers in Glasgow, Owensboro and Elizabethtown, which also includes Ft. Knox and Radcliff.
Classes are offered to fit a variety of schedules in the morning, afternoon, evening, on weekends, and online. Summer Sessions is administered through the Division of Extended Learning & Outreach (DELO).
Students can earn up to 15 credit hours toward their degree. For many students this is an ideal way to catch up on classes they may have dropped or missed and to stay on track for their target graduation date. Financial aid, on-campus housing, meal plans, computer labs and other student services are also available to assist students with various needs during summer.
WKU is encouraging incoming freshmen to get a head start on their General Education requirements by taking classes in the summer, rather than waiting until the start of the fall semester. Many graduate-level education classes are being offered for K-12 teachers who need to acquire their master's degree.
In addition, several special workshops and camps are scheduled for the summer, including a creative writing workshop through the English department and a grant writing workshop through the political science department.
