Lewisburg police chief Alan Alsup estimates that about only one in three of the motorists he pulls over are using seat belts.

And even though that's against the law, Alsup has been taking it easy on people.

“I've just been giving them warnings,” Alsup said. “I haven't been issuing citations yet - that's coming, though.”

In an effort to get more people wearing seat belts, Alsup teamed up with Lewisburg School principal Barrett Nelson to start help raise awareness among the school's middle schoolers.

“The hope is to get them used to wearing seat belts before they actually start driving and feel like they are too cool for them,” Alsup said.

So Alsup - with the help of a Lewisburg student - came up with some new signage for the school.

The idea came from a statewide program that places similar signs in high schools.

But since Lewisburg only has an elementary and middle school, Alsup had to improvise.

He first went to the Barren River Area Development District (BRADD) with his idea.

The organization agreed to supply Lewisburg school with some signs, but they were just going to be very plain with block lettering.

“We're dealing with eighth graders, so I didn't think that would be very affective,” Alsup said. “That's why I wanted to try an incorporate something with the school mascot along with the police department hat.”

Alsup asked Nelson if there were any students in the school that could draw what he had in mind.

It didn't take Nelson long to give the project to eighth-grade student Ryan Stokes.

“I was glad to do it,” Stokes said. “It wasn't that tough.”

Stokes first draft was exactly what Alsup was hoping for and the three signs were made - thanks to donations from the Lewisburg IGA and the Lewisburg City Council.

One sign is up at the entrance where the car-riding students are dropped off each day, another by the main exit and the third will be put up by the faculty exit.
