According to Detective Len Embry, the arrests of Jerome DeWayne Spivey and Curtis Wright came about through an investigation into the arson at the Mickey Morrison residence in Adairville. Although the investigation into the fire is continuing, detectives did learn that soon after the fire, Spivey was at Wright's home trading a television that had been stolen from the Morrison residence for a handgun. Wright lives about a mile and a half from the location of the fire.
Embry said that Spivey is allegedly a convicted felon from Tennessee and the ATF will carry out any further investigation into his role in any incidence.
As for other arsons and thefts in the Adairville area, Embry said they are still investigation. The Kentucky State Police, the State Fire Marshal and others are assisting in these investigations.
David West, arson investigator for Post 3 of the KSP said they are hoping to obtain some indictments soon on several arsons that have occurred in South Logan and Simpson County.
“There have been several fires over the past several months,” West said.
Houses, barns and hay have been burned and investigators believe many of these may be connected.
Embry encouraged anyone who has information regarding these arsons to call the Sheriff's Department. To find out about ongoing cases, visit www.stopcrimeonline.org.
As for the thefts around Adairville involving copper and electrical wiring, Embry said they seem to have stopped for now. One local business owner caught an intruder in the act of stealing but let him go before police arrived. Embry said they have been unable to locate him recently.
Embry said another string of burglaries in North and South Logan involves the perpetrators knocking on the door of a home several times to make sure no one is home. They then break into a back door and got straight to the master bedroom looking for jewelry and weapons.
Embry said some of the jewelry that has been stolen is heirloom jewelry and cannot be replaced. Though they have been checking pawn shops and such, they have not found any of the stolen goods.
“It is so unfortunate,” Embry said of the thefts. One attempted theft was apparently averted when the home alarm system went off and the perpetrators left without taking anything.
“An alarm is one of the most cost efficient ways to protect property,” Embry said.
As the Sheriff's Department continues to investigate these many cases, Embry said he is glad to see several neighborhood watches starting up in the county.
“We're really trying to get the neighborhood watches going,” Embry said.
In the northern part of the county, Connie Sitz has really got the Lewisburg-North Logan Neighborhood Watch going well Embry said. And the Adairville-South Logan Neighborhood watch is coming on strong, he added.
“That's what it's going to take - having more eyes,” Embry said. He encouraged citizens to keep their eyes open, watch what goes on in their neighborhoods and let police know what's going on.
Embry said he and others from the Sheriff's Department are always glad to lend a hand when it comes to starting neighborhood watch programs and talking about crime prevention.
