This season's concert will feature music of English composer John Rutter. Born in London in 1945, Rutter received his first musical training at Highgate School. He then went on to study music at Clare College, Cambridge, where he published his first compositions and conducted his first recording while still an undergraduate. Rutter has since achieved international recognition as a respected composer and director of choral and instrumental works. A few of the works the Chorale will perform include the beautiful carols “What sweeter music” and “Angel's Carol.”
Also included on the concert will be an enjoyable narrative by Rutter titled “Brother Heinrich's Christmas.” This work tells the tale of Brother Heinrich and his donkey companion Sigismund, as Brother Heinrich struggles to compose a new carol.
In addition to the music of Rutter, the Chorale will present “The Best Time Of The Year” a compilation of many of the favorite songs of the Christmas season. The audience will find itself recalling fond memories and possibly singing along as these familiar tunes fill the building.
The Chorale is enjoying working under the leadership of David Paul Gibson, who is in his second year as director. Mr. Gibson holds degrees from Western Kentucky University and has over 35 years experience in the musical community as a performer, composer and director. He currently serves as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Music at Western Kentucky University and as Director of Music at The Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green. Martha Foster serves as accompanist for the Chorale which she has done for over 20 years.
The DeGraffenried Chorale was formed in 1978 by long time educator and musician Hazel Carver. From its beginnings in the living room of Mrs. Carver's home, the Chorale has provided the community with beautiful music of varied styles and tastes. All 34 members of the group would like to invite the community to attend the December 6th concert to set the tone for the Christmas season. The concert is free to the public and everyone is encouraged to take advantage of this event. Donations will be accepted at the concert and would be greatly appreciated.
