Russellville's Water Department recently located a substantial leak on East Third and Franklin Streets, which is expected to save the city approximately $35,000 annually.
Russellville Utilities Director Darrell Baldwin said this was a great discovery and gives his employees credit for the find. Baldwin says the water, sewer and I&I departments are continually working to better the city's system, adding that working together for the good of all the departments is what brings success.
Baldwin said they located the leak after noticing there was sewage in a nearby stream on Third and Franklin. They ran a camera through the sewer line and the problem was detected right away.
According to Baldwin, they found that the sewer line ran parallel with a water line which was fractured as well, dumping eight to eight and a half gallons of treated water per minute into the city's sewer system. Baldwin said not only was the city having to pay for a tremendous amount of undetected water but also having to treat already treated water through the sewer plant.
Baldwin said they dug up both lines, replaced them and encased them both to prevent it from happening again.
Mayor Shirlee Yassney is very proud of all the department's dedicated service to the city and the citizens. “Anytime a leak is found and fixed, it saves the city money, which in turn saves the taxpayers,” said Yassney.
