Logan County's connection to the Lewis and Clark Expedition will be featured on Hometown History Day, Oc. 7, opening day of the 2006 Tobacco and Heritage Festival.

The local newspaper, “The Farmer's Friend,” was the first publication to report the death of Marywether Lewis in its Oct. 27, 1809, edidtion.

Historic Russellville, Inc., that has a major role in planning Hometown History Day this year, has procured an historical marker relating this information. It will be dedicated during the celebration.

William Clark's niece, Eleanor, married Benjamin Temple. They lived in Russellville and later Auburn. It is known that William Clark visited Logan County. The Temple family provided leadership in the early development of Auburn. Their home, at the head of Black Lick Creek, was named “Federal Grove,” repeated today as the name of the bed and breakfast established in east Auburn.

Events will be arranged both to entertain and to enlighten all ages about Logan County's connection to the historic Lewis and Clark expedition. The year 2006 marks the 200th anniversary of the return journey.
