On Wednesday, April 12 at approximately 11:50 a.m., the Logan County Sheriff's Department responded to a single vehicle accident on Morgantown Road approximately three miles north of Russellville.

The accident occurred when a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am driven by 33-year-old Shannon Atkinson of Trenton was traveling south and was overtaking another vehicle when it dropped off the shoulder of the road and then went out of control.

The vehicle left the roadway on the east side and overturned several times, ejecting Mr. Atkinson and a passenger, 47-year-old Rodney Embry of Russellville, in the process.

Atkinson and Embry, along with another passenger 28-year-old Ronnie Yates of Franklin, were transported to Logan Memorial Hospital by Medical Center EMS and then Atkinson was flown by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. where he later died from injuries sustained in the accident.

Embry was transferred to Vanderbilt Hospital suffering from spine and rib fractures. Yates was treated and released.

The accident is being investigated by Sgt. Larry Christie. Christie was assisted at the scene by Sheriff Wallace Whittaker and other members of the department along with Medical Center EMS and members of the Russellville Rural Fire Department.
