A Logan County native, Lawson was the son of the late James Green and Floretta Smith Lawson. He was a factory worker.
Surviving Mr. Lawson are his wife, Mae Latham Lawson of Russellville; son Terry Lawson of Lewisburg; two daughters, Connie Smotherman and Peggy Wilkins, both of Russellville; two brothers, twin Marvle Lee Lawson of Russellville and James Lawson of Dunmor; and four sisters, Lennie Whittinghill, Bertha Kirkman and Sue Daugherty, all of Russellville and Joyce Robertson of Elkton.
