Murray State University's school of agriculture is working with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture in the statewide effort to assist farmers in the southern states displaced by the recent hurricanes. The West Kentucky Livestock and Exposition Center has been designated as a regional collection point for supplies that will be sent to the affected areas.

Supplies and livestock feed are in critical demand to replace downed fences and supplement pastures that have been left bare by storm water and debris. Observers near Hattiesburg, Miss., estimate it will take months to remove downed trees in that area and rebuild fences.

Items needed include barbed wire, T-posts or wood posts, fence post drivers, brace wire, woven wire, gates (12-foot and 16-foot) and hay rings. Electric fence wire, posts and related supplies are being collected, as well as both solar and electric fence chargers. Chain saws are needed for clearing storm debris. Bagged livestock feed and water tubs are also in great demand.

The Kentucky Cattlemen's Association is coordinating cash and credit card donations that will be used to purchase additional fencing and farm supplies. Persons who would like to contribute in this manner should make checks payable to "KCA-Katrina Fund" and mail to: KCA-Katrina Fund, 176 Pasadena Drive, Lexington, KY 40503.

Credit card donations can be made over the phone by calling 1-800-278-0899. Donations made through the KCA are tax-deductible. Donors of supplies may request a receipt for tax purposes by contacting the Kentucky Department of Agriculture at 1-888-567-9589 for more information.

Other partners in the relief effort include Kentucky 4-H, Kentucky FFA, Kentucky Farm Bureau, Anderson Circle Farm, Hardin County Cattlemen's Association, Kentucky Dairy Development Council, Kentucky Pork Producers and the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association. University of Kentucky personnel will facilitate picking up supplies from each collection point and delivering to the designated relief sites.

The collection of supplies will continue through Oct. 7.
