Everything came together positively for the Russellville soccer team in its district soccer match last week except the win.

"We played well and showed that we had learned what we had worked on all season, but we couldn't get the ball to go into the goal the second half," Coach Tom Thompson said.

"We had lots of shots on goal. Some hit the frame of the goal or went above it or just outside, but after the first 18 minutes of the game we never could score again."

As a result, the Muhlenberg North Stars won 3-2 in overtime over the Panthers in the Seventh District match at South.

Russellville scored early on a goal by freshman Cory Corder from 12 yards out.

About 18 minutes into the contest, junior John Starks scored from about 15 yards out, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

"It looked as if we were going to win easily," Thompson says.

It didn't happen. Six minutes later, the Stars were awarded a penalty kick. They scored and momentum swung the other direction.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, North scored again, tying the contest.

It was a cool and wet day. "It was rough out there and it was like playing in a lake, but it was the same for both teams," Thompson notes.

After regulation ended with the score tied 2-2, two 10-minute overtimes were played.

North scored in the first one and neither team could score again.

"I thought all 11 of our players gave a tremendous effort and showed they had learned a lot about the game," Thompson says. "We would have liked to have played more, but it just wasn't to be."

The two teams were evenly matched all year. They had tied 1-1 in their first match and 2-2 in the second. Playing 100 minutes in the 'tiebreaker' was a fitting conclusion.
