Area veterans who are either prisoners of war or missing in action (POW/MIA) will be remembered on Sunday, Aug. 29 during a ceremony to be conducted by members of the community and Rolling Thunder KY Chapter 1.
Working with them to honor these veterans will be the mayor, police, firefighters, ROTC and other members of the community.
Starting at 2 p.m. on the Russellville Public Square, Rolling Thunder members and others will speak of those who were taken prisoner or otherwise unaccounted for in various wars and conflicts as the POW/MIA flag is hoisted to fly in its place of honor beneath the American flag.
The POW/MIA flag serves as a constant reminder of the POW/MIAs' plight. The flag will fly 365 days a year in the town square.
Rolling Thunder, a group that seeks to reach a full accounting of all U.S. servicemen who are either prisoners of war or missing in action, worked with Russellville Mayor Shirlee Yassney to coordinate this event.
"We will not forget these patriots who were willing to give their all to preserve and protect our freedoms. We owe a great debt of gratitude to these quiet heroes who displayed great honor and who sacrificed so much for our nation," said Rolling Thunder Board Member Al 'Boots' Edwards of Russellville.
